2. That’s why a serving can be so low in calories (25-100) and packed with flavor and nutrients.
3. Seaweed is an excellent source of iodine and vitamin K and a very good source of folate, magnesium, iron, and calcium.

Boys Exposed To Higher Levels Of BPA

"Boys exposed to higher levels of Bisephenol A (BPA) while they’re still in the womb are more likely to suffer from hyperactivity, aggression, depression and anxiety at the age of seven, according to a study released this month by researchers at the University of California, Berkeley.

BPA, a man-made, carbon-based product commonly thought to be an endocrine-disrupter, is found in many plastic products, including the liners in canned food. It’s long been the subject of studies pointing to the harmful effects of its hormone-altering chemicals. A 2008 study showed that 95 percent of Americans had BPA in their urine, and that BPA was linked to increased body weight".

It is said that up to 10% of people will have a pituitary adenoma (which might never have caused a problem) by the time of their death. Some tumors secrete one or more hormones in excess. Such so-called secretory pituitary adenomas are usually found due to hormonal imbalances that affect bodily functions. They may be relatively small when detected".

Memory Boosting Foods

Brain foodsBy Marisa Moore, MB, RDN, LD
If you’re feeling forgetful, it could be due to a lack of sleep or a number of other reasons including genetics, level of physical activity, and lifestyle and environmental factors. However, there’s no doubt that diet plays a major role in brain health.
The best menu for boosting memory and brain function encourages good blood flow to the brain — much like what you’d eat to nourish and protect your heart.

What Kind of Milk Is Best? - Ask Dr. Weil

What Kind of Milk Is Best?
You have mentioned various alternatives to cow's milk, including soy and almond milk, but what do you think about coconut milk? Do you have a preferred substitute for cow's milk in an adult's diet?
A
(Published 8/20/2013)

I don't view coconut milk as a substitute for other types of milk because of its high fat content – one cup contains 48 grams of fat, of which 43 grams are saturated fat. It is also high in calories – 445 per cup compared to 150 for a cup of whole milk and 130 for a cup of fortified soy milk.
If you need a substitute for cow's milk, I usually recommend soy milk. It is widely available and provides more protein than other "milks" on the market. It also has a creamy texture, but you may have to experiment with different brands to find one with a taste you like. Although soy milk is high in calcium, it doesn't provide as much as cow's milk, so look for a calcium-fortified brand. Buy only organic soy products and look for soy milk brands that do not contain the thickening agent carrageenan, a seaweed derivative, which I do not view as safe.

Recipe For Homemade Yogurt:

 Ingredients:

  • 1 gallon milk (preferably organic and grass-fed)
  • 1 cup yogurt (preferably plain and organic Desi Dahi or yogurt) to use as starter culture for the first batch.
Instructions:
  • Add milk to a large pot and cook on high heat on the stove. When you see little bubbles on the surface, remove from the heat.
  • The procedure for heating in the microwave- heat  medium to large size glass bowl on high heat for 10-12minutes. (The heat varies on the type of the oven you have)
  • Let milk cool where you can comfortably place your hand on the side of the pot (or dip your clean finger into the milk) for at least 10 seconds.
  • You can collect the cream layer on top of the milk to make ghee. Follow my recipe how to make ghee from butter http://nutritionforasianindians.blogspot.com/2013/08/health-benfits-of-ghee-and-how-to-make.html.
  • Once it’s cooled down, scoop the yoghurt into the warm milk.
  • Stir gently 2-3 times to make sure it’s all mixed well, then pour (or ladle) the milk/yogurt mixture into glass bowl.
  •  Turn oven light on (very important - this keeps it slightly warm), and let the milk rest for 4 hours. (you can set the timer)
  • For Microwave oven - Place the yogurt mixed warm milk glass bowl in the oven and heat the bowl for *12 seconds and let it rest in peace for 4hrs.
  • Now take the yogurt out and rest on the counter until they’ve cooled to room temperature. Then, refrigerate the yogurt where they’ll keep for up to 10 days.
  • You can now use your new yoghurt to start your next batch!

10 Things The Processed Food Industry Doesn't Want You To Know -

10 Things the Processed Food Industry Doesn't Want You to Know

By Donna Gates, Body Ecology

3. Processed Foods Often Contain Ingredients That Do Not Follow The Principle of Food Combining

This can lead to low energy, poor digestion, illness, acidic blood and weight gain. An example would be a frozen meat and cheese pizza. Cheese (a dairy product), meat (an animal protein) and pizza crust (a grain product) make a terrible food combination that can wreak havoc on your digestive health.

5. A Diet High in Processed Foods Can Lead to Depression, Memory Issues and Mood Swings

7. Nutrition Labels on Processed Foods Are Often Misleading and Have Harmful Health Effects

Many labels say “sugar free,” but contain other sweeteners like agave, which is like high fructose corn syrup.

Additionally, product labeling may hide ingredients like GM (genetically modified) foods and harmful additives like MSG. (These are hidden behind words on the label like “natural flavorings” or “approved spices”).

10. Processed Foods are Made For Long Shelf-life, Not Long Human Life!

Chemicals, additives and preservatives are added to processed foods so that they will last for a long time without going rancid or affecting the taste of the food. Food manufacturers spend time, money and research on beautiful packaging and strategies to lengthen shelf-life, with little attention on how the foods will lengthen your life or create lasting health.

Know Your Ingredients

Know Your IngredientsThe ingredient list on packaged foods is similar to a recipe in that it tells you what's in the food. Knowing how to read the ingredient list is a helpful tool in many ways, including weight management.
Foods with more than one ingredient must have an ingredient list on the label. Ingredients are listed in descending order by weight from most to least. For example, a bottle of fruit juice that lists apples as its first ingredient means it has more apples in it than any other ingredient.
Knowing how to read the ingredient list is also useful for people with special food needs such as:

Health Benefits Of Ghee, And How to Make Ghee From Butter

HOW TO MAKE GHEE WITH CREAM OF YOGURT

1. Boil one gallon of  unpasteurized whole milk or 2% organic milk (from Farmer's Market). I encourage whole milk.
2. Once it reaches room temperature, add one cup of yogurt to the milk, place lid and ferment  overnight or 4hrs (climatic conditions varies from country to country) in the Microwave oven or Conventional oven with light turned on.
3. Next day, curd forms with a thick layer of cream.
4. Cream of yogurt or dahi (skin above yogurt) is removed each day and stored in a container and refrigerated.
5. At the end of the week, the collected cream from yogurt is brought to room temperature and churned using a whisk hand blender for 12-15 minutes.
6. Add 3-4 cups of water to this and continue to whisk for a minute or two till the residue is a thick buttermilk. Strain the butter milk.
7. Wash the butter in water at least 4-5 times. This thoroughly washed butter can now be used to prepare ghee.

***Do try the recipe collecting creamy layer on boiled milk too.

How much is too much to your body

"Do you ever get the feeling you’re doing everything “right” for your health and still getting nowhere? And more frustrating is the idea that if something isn’t working for you, then challenging your body to the extent like drinking eight glasses of water a day isn’t fixing your problems, then drink ten. If running a mile in the morning isn’t helping, then run four miles. And if being on a low-carb diet isn’t working for you, then you must need a zero-carb diet. All this philosophy which, by the way, I totally disagree with. Whether or not more of anything is better depends on a lot of factors, which should all be centered around the individual–aka you".

What Is Trader Joe's Hiding, new investigation by Vani a.k.a Foodbabe

WHAT TO BUY AT TRADER JOE’S

  • Certified organic fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds
  • Certified organic branded Trader Joe’s products (USDA certified), for example their organic popcorn made with olive oil is a good choice
  • Certified organic milk products
  • Certified organic coffee and teas (like Yogi tea)
  • Certified organic frozen goods like frozen berries
  • Some conventional items on occasion (like kimchi) that do not have high-risk GMO crop ingredients like corn, soy, cottonseed, papaya, sugar, canola, zucchini/squash (here’s a full list of potential GMO ingredients)
  • Paper products – they use environmentally friendly practices and recycled paper.... continue reading http://foodbabe.com/2013/08/07/what-is-trader-joes-hiding/   WHAT NOT TO BUY AT TRADER JOE’S
  • Charles Shaw Wine, otherwise known as “2 buck chuck” – It’s so poor in quality, some experts call this stuff “grape-flavored soda” and compare it to what “Ronald McDonald is to the cheeseburger.” This wine is not made in a winery rather, “this wine is made in a factory, with a lot of synthetic and concentrated products, like grape musk, added to manipulate the flavors from bad grapes.” (Stick to organic wine with no detected or added sulfites)
  • Non-Trader Joe’s brands that likely contain GMO ingredients like Simply Lite, Reddi Egg, Dare, Orangina, The Laughing Cow, Morningstar, Toffutti, Think Thin Bars, Toblerone, Kashi, Barbara’s Bakery, Annie Chun’s and Power Crunch
  • Trader Joe’s branded products or other processed products that contain high-risk GMO crop ingredients like corn, soy, cottonseed, papaya, sugar, canola, zucchini/squash (A majority of their products contain one or more of these ingredients, until they can be fully transparent, I would not trust them.)
  • Pre-packaged meals like sandwiches, salads, and sushi – many of these items contain ingredients you definitely don’t want to be eating,  like cellulose (wood pulp), or imitation crab meat. Additionally, there’s way too much sodium added to these meals and they can give you a serious case of water-weight bloat and bubble gut.
  • Trader Joe’s branded dairy, yogurt, or eggs, because they are likely produced from animals fed GMO corn and soy and can contain antibiotics
  • Non Trader Joe’s branded dairy, yogurt, or eggs because they could contain (cancer causing) rBST growth hormone, GMOs and antibiotics
  • Non-organic meat or dairy, Trader Joe’s still allows antibiotics and other harmful chemicals – like autolyzed yeast extract (a hidden form of MSG) in their meat. ...continue reading http://foodbabe.com/2013/08/07/what-is-trader-joes-hiding/

All About Dietary Supplements

Should You Take Dietary Supplements?
A Look at Vitamins, Minerals, Botanicals and More

"More than half of all Americans take one or more dietary supplements daily or on occasion. Supplements are available without a prescription and usually come in pill, powder or liquid form. Common supplements include vitamins, minerals and herbal products, also known as botanicals.
People take these supplements to make sure they get enough essential nutrients and to maintain or improve their health. But not everyone needs to take supplements.
“It’s possible to get all of the nutrients you need by eating a variety of healthy foods, so you don’t have to take one,” says Carol Haggans, a registered dietitian and consultant to NIH.

“There’s little evidence that any supplement can reverse the course of any chronic disease,” says Hopp. “Don’t take supplements with that expectation.”

Kale Chips

Do you know munching on Kale Chips will meet your entire nutrients for the day. Then what are we waiting for? let munch the healthy snack..

Here we go!  Recipe for fitness

Ingredients

2 Head Kale leaves, thoroughly washed and Dried
2 Tbsp Coconut Oil/Sesame Oil/Olive Oil
Salt to Sprinkle

1 Tsp Hot Paprika or crushed pepper flakes (Optional)
1 Tsp Sesame Seeds (Optional)

Directions:

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
2. Remove the ribs from the kale and cut into bite size pieces.
3. Toss the leaves with the choice of your oil, salt, paprika or crushed pepper flakes, sesame seeds and place on a baking sheet.
4. Bake 12- 15min until crisp.
5. I like to squeeze lemon for the sour, bitter and spicy taste from Kale, it is optional though.
6.  Enjoy the crispy, healthy Kale Chips.
"Health benefits of Kale -
Kale is very high in vitamin K, known as the clotting vitamin because without it, blood won’t clot properly. If you are taking blood thinning or anti-coagulant drugs, like warfarin (brand name Coumadin), you need to avoid large amounts of kale. Kale’s level of vitamin K — a cup has more than 1,000 percent of the recommended daily amount (RDA) — could interfere with your drugs.
For your eyes: Kale is high in lutein and zeaxanthin, phytochemicals found in the retina, which could help reduce the risk of macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness in older people.
For your immune system: Kale is rich in beta-carotene (vitamin A), a powerful antioxidant that may help boost the immune system and possibly protect against some chronic diseases and cancer. At least one study also found that long-term consumption of beta-carotene had cognitive benefits.
For your bones: Kale is is one of the few vegetables with a decent amount of calcium, but it’s especially high in magnesium — just a cup contains 40 percent of the RDA
For your heart: While recent studies have found that antioxidant supplements, like vitamin E pills, don’t protect against heart disease, foods like kale that are naturally high in antioxidants are definitely heart-healthy, says the Cleveland Clinic. Plus, kale’s magnesium and potassium help lower blood pressure, and its high fiber content can help lower cholesterol — all beneficial factors in lowering your risk of cardiovascular illness."
